Thoughts On Walks: Hiking an entire country 🇱🇮

For those that read my newsletter, it will come as little surprise that my walks are taking on a spectacular relaunch — and even then, this may be a little Easter egg delight! READ ON because this is where you come into things!

A little background first:

Yes, that’s right, some years ago I began a VLOG and somewhat BLOG right here called ‘Thoughts On Walks’ — a weekly diary of reflections from the daily walks which underpin my art practice. For a very long time, I didn’t know how to actively combine them with my visual work, but now things are changing, and EXCITING is an understatement!

Where the hell are ya?

Yesterday, I swore I would not reveal my location until I completed the first day because I knew the first day would be the hardest, as it involved completing 2 Stages of the Liechtenstein Weg, a trail which runs across the whole country. And you may say, “Hey Kika, that’s a small country,” but that’s exactly how I started, one step at a time—small is mighty!

Why are you doing this?

This is officially the launch celebrating the start of a new chapter where I will journey to meet others and film one conversation at a time, one question at a time, creating a stage where my thoughts collaborate with yours!

How do I get involved?

I may be celebrating the start of the journey here, but the initial conversations will take place in Cyprus from beginning to mid-September, and in London thereafter.

My list is growing and I’d love to hear from you, so please do check out my brand new website in the making under ‘Thoughts On Walks’ for further info, or DM me here!

Love to hear your thoughts!

Love,

K Xxx

5 Stages

75 kilometres or 47 miles

Across 11 Municipalities

From the southern tip bordering Switzerland to the north-eastern border of Austria

Through hamlets, villages, towns, forests, Alpine mountains and more

A severe weather orange heat warning

A bit of grit, determination, much enjoyment and delight

I DID IT!

I hiked Liechtenstein!

It wasn’t overwhelming, it was a pleasure.

And when I stopped and realised what I’d achieved, I felt overcome...

Hello Guys, happy Monday from a very shattered Thoughts On Walks. Thanks for following my journey through Liechtenstein.

I am delighted, pleased and proud to have completed the complete journey across Liechtenstein from the south and Swiss border to the northeast on the Austrian border. Now I'm back in Zurich and I'm waiting to go to the airport, and I just want to invite those in Cyprus in September to sign up to my expression of interest form who would like to take part in my first conversations.

The question is: What is home to you? Before I come back to England and continue the conversations with an ever-growing list of interested people and those who I've invited, please sign up to my website. The link is in the bio: www.kikapierides.com/thoughtsonwalks. I look forward to speaking to you soon.

Have a lovely day. Tschuss.

The Story Behind Thoughts On Walks

Alongside my chatty and exuberant personality, I’d always valued walking throughout my life and was oft known amongst peers as ‘The Taxi Driver of London’ (on legs) for my pursuits. But Thoughts On Walks only really started 6 years ago and was triggered by a combination of grief, poor health and COVID.

I initially started walking uphill on short walks of 15 minutes a day. I thought that if I could climb that hill without losing my breath, I would have achieved my goal. But 15 minutes soon became 30, then one hour, and eventually one and a half hours.

All of the hidden sights and gems of urban nature began to unfurl before my eyes and, as they did so, I noticed nature’s colours. It was these colours which inspired me to pick up kids’ colour packs from a £1 store. Here began the creation of my visual practice, Contemporary Patternism, and alongside it, the written and spoken reflections that began on my walks—the thoughts about my practice, which soon shifted to the unspoken parts we don’t often see expressed visually.

At some point, words took over as I processed my recovery, and throughout, the words and visuals interwove as I regained myself.

From Walks to Talks

But it was not until I really started to find a renewed sense of my roots after loss, through engaging with the Cypriot diaspora, being prompted to start Thoughts On Walks by other community members, and an unplanned journey around Southern Croatia, that I started to revisit this chapter.

During my trip, I was again inspired to reintroduce and emotionally release through a series of filmed and written thoughts along my walks around the islands. At some point, I unexpectedly found myself in an isolated fishing shelter in Soline, Mljet National Park, totally alone with my thoughts. It came to me: What if the thoughts became a collaboration? What if they became Thoughts on Talks? That was the start.

Become Part of the Archive

I am seeking individuals who enjoy reflecting and speaking about those reflections openly, who are less concerned with the camera and more with a moment of shared experience—a universal one. I welcome those from all walks of life.

A Living Archive of Human Experience

In a day and age where we have it all—the information, the politics and the opportunity — I would be honoured to invite you to take part in a living archive, a chorus of individual voices which promote universal understanding for just a moment in time.
